Ensure Peace of Mind: KWA Launches Comprehensive Safety Audit of Water Storage Tanks in Kochi
The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is set to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of all water storage tanks within the Kochi Corporation limits, a decision prompted by a recent incident in Thammanam. A 1.35-crore-litre water tank experienced a significant failure, disrupting water supply and causing extensive damage to nearby properties.
Currently, the Kochi Corporation houses 14 water storage tanks, comprising both overhead and ground-level structures. Initial investigations suggest that the Thammanam tank’s collapse was not due to structural damage, yet the KWA is undertaking this precautionary assessment in light of the incident. “A thorough check and cleaning of all storage tanks were carried out just two months ago. We are conducting this review following the accident,” KWA sources stated.
The collapse affected drinking water supply to approximately 30% of households within the Corporation and adjacent areas, stemming from the failure of a chamber wall in a twin-chambered tank. Commissioned in 1985, the tank experienced partial collapse after its foundation sank into the soil. Sources emphasize that there were no visible signs indicating structural issues prior to the incident, which raises concerns about unseen factors contributing to the failure. “There was no warning. Daily inspections by operators showed no visible cracks or leaks. Typically, we observe warning signs before such failures occur, but those were absent this time. Other issues could be at play beyond mere soil subsidence,” they noted.
KWA representatives pointed to soil subsidence and foundation sinking as likely causes for the tank’s partial collapse. “The affected tank features a unique design; however, we do not anticipate similar foundation issues with other tanks in the area, as proper piling has been executed,” sources confirmed.
This proactive approach by the KWA underscores the critical importance of infrastructure safety in managing public utilities. As the authority works to safeguard water supplies in Kochi, attention to preventive measures and regular assessments is essential for averting future incidents that could jeopardize public safety and service reliability.
Published on November 13, 2025, this story highlights the ongoing efforts by the KWA to ensure the reliability and safety of water storage systems amidst increasing concerns for infrastructure integrity across Kerala. With the safety audit underway, residents can expect enhanced scrutiny of water sources, reinforcing the commitment to preserve essential services and protect community welfare.
