Urgent: Kaziranga Highway Movement Curbs Amid Rising Flood Risk
The Kaliabor Co‑District Administration in Assam has imposed strict prohibitory orders across the Kaziranga National Park corridor with immediate effect to protect migrating wildlife as monsoon flooding intensifies. The directive, issued by Additional District Magistrate Raj Boruah under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, follows an official warning that heavy rains are likely to submerge a stretch of National Highway 715, forcing animals to move toward the higher ground of Karbi Anglong and raising the risk of road accidents on the busy route.
Officials say the flooding-driven movement of wildlife along the Rangalu‑to‑Bagori corridor creates dangerous encounters between animals and vehicles. To reduce collisions and disturbance, the administration has imposed several measures along the affected stretch, effective immediately and for the duration of the seasonal risk.
Motorists are prohibited from exceeding a speed limit of 40 km/h; the assembly of five or more people in designated animal corridors is banned; parking of vehicles is not allowed except in cases of mechanical breakdown; and loud music, unnecessary honking and the use of bright electrical headlights at night have been outlawed to avoid startling wildlife and obstructing visibility.
Emergency services, medical staff and security forces are exempted from these seasonal restrictions. Standard violators will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Authorities have urged motorists and local residents to comply with the orders to safeguard both human life and the park’s wildlife during the monsoon.
