Gaurav Gogoi Demands Action on University Governance in Parliament
Congress Member of Parliament from Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, has raised urgent concerns about the recent controversies affecting prominent universities in the Northeast, notably Tezpur University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Gauhati University. In a social media post, Gogoi highlighted that these institutions, once celebrated for their academic excellence, are now making headlines “for the wrong reasons.” He pointed out that the actions of Vice-Chancellors at these universities have cast doubt and resulted in dissatisfaction among students and faculty alike.
Gogoi expressed that these issues have adversely impacted the performance and rankings of the universities. He has reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the situation at Tezpur University, emphasizing that his concerns encompass the entire Northeast region. Furthermore, he intends to bring this matter to Parliament, pressing the central government for greater transparency, accountability, and academic freedom within higher education institutions across the region.
In a related statement, Gogoi expressed hope for a constructive response from the Prime Minister’s Office aimed at restoring the credibility and academic atmosphere of these esteemed universities. A delegation from Tezpur University, comprised of teachers’ association members and student leaders, met with the Congress MP to present documented issues and sought his immediate assistance.
In his correspondence to the Prime Minister, Gogoi underscored that Tezpur University, established under the historic Assam Accord, has long been a key center of higher education and innovation in the Northeast.
