US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has labeled Hamas an “impediment” to peace in Gaza, calling for the group to disarm and cease its interception of humanitarian aid. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rubio emphasized that Hamas’s actions are detrimental to international efforts aimed at supporting President Donald Trump’s 20 Point Plan to provide critical assistance to civilians in the region. “Hamas continues to deprive the people of Gaza of the humanitarian aid they desperately need. This theft undermines international efforts,” Rubio remarked.
Alongside his comments, Rubio shared a video from the Pentagon’s Central Command, which reportedly showed Hamas members stealing food from an aid truck. He asserted that for Gaza to secure a brighter future, “Hamas is the impediment. They must lay down their arms and stop their looting.”
The U.S. Central Command detailed that its Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) observed suspected Hamas operatives looting an aid truck that was part of a humanitarian convoy delivering essential supplies to northern Khan Younis in Gaza. Surveillance footage from a U.S. MQ-9 aerial drone revealed operatives attacking the driver and seizing both the truck and its contents. The driver’s current status remains unknown.
Over the past week, international partners have managed to deliver more than 600 trucks laden with commercial goods and humanitarian aid into Gaza each day, underscoring the severity of the situation. However, incidents like this looting severely undermine these efforts. The CMCC comprises representatives from nearly 40 nations and organizations, all working to facilitate the flow of humanitarian, logistical, and security assistance to the region.
Meanwhile, tensions in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas have intensified, particularly amid a fragile ceasefire. On Saturday, Israel confirmed that the remains of three individuals recently handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross in Gaza were not those of any hostages, marking another hurdle in the US-brokered negotiations. This transfer followed an exchange in which Israel returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians to Gaza on Friday, completing an earlier arrangement involving two hostages.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office verified that while the identities of the three deceased remain unknown, they were not hostages. In response, Hamas’s armed wing stated that it had proposed providing samples from unidentified bodies for identification, but Israel declined their offer, seeking full remains instead.
As health officials in Gaza struggle to identify the deceased due to a shortage of DNA testing kits, the region remains on edge following the violent conflict that erupted after a Hamas-led attack in 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military campaign that, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, has led to over 68,600 fatalities in the region. Israel has refuted allegations of genocide from a UN commission and other sources, challenging the reported death toll while not providing alternative figures.
