Silchar, Oct 18: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar is gearing up for Deepotsav 2025, with plans to illuminate its campus with an impressive 1,11,111 earthen lamps. This year’s celebration, themed ‘Operation Sindoor’, carries profound emotional significance, as it will honor the musical legend and cultural icon of Assam, Zubeen Garg. His artistry has inspired countless individuals, and the event is expected to be both visually stunning and deeply symbolic, embodying themes of remembrance, reverence, and resilience that Zubeen exemplified in his life and music.
Professor Dilip Kumar Baidya, Director of NIT Silchar, remarked, “We have celebrated Deepotsav at NIT Silchar for several years, but this time it’s being planned on a grand scale. With 1 lakh diyas symbolizing purity, devotion, and collective strength, this year’s celebration holds special significance as we pay tribute to the singing legend and heartthrob of Assam, Zubeen Garg.”
The ceremony’s journey began in 2023 as a student-led initiative featuring only 5,000 earthen lamps, which represented unity and devotion. Over time, Deepotsav has grown into one of the most remarkable cultural festivals organized by an Indian institution of national importance. In 2024, the event expanded significantly, showcasing 51,000 diyas and introducing the Sanatan Corridor-a tribute to India’s temple heritage stretching from Assam to Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to Jammu and Kashmir. This corridor highlighted the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, celebrating India’s vibrant diversity and cultural harmony.
This year, under the banner of Operation Sindoor, the celebration will reflect sanctity, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. According to student organizers, the goal extends beyond simply lighting up the NIT Silchar campus; they aim to inspire hearts across the nation with the values of dharma, seva, and harmony.
