Assam Government Blocks Mobile Internet in Baksa Amid Rising Tensions
The Assam government announced on Wednesday a suspension of mobile internet and data services throughout Baksa district following reports of a tense law and order situation during the transfer of undertrial prisoners to the district jail. This directive, issued by Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department, aims to address rising concerns about potential unrest near the Baksa District Jail and the circulation of inflammatory content on social media.
The suspension will take effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice. However, voice calls and broadband services via fixed-line connections will continue to operate normally. Authorities have made it clear that any violations of this order will be subject to penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, as well as relevant provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.
The notification has been circulated among senior officials, including the Director General of Police and the Baksa District Magistrate, along with telecom service providers, ensuring strict compliance with the order. The government underscored that this measure has been implemented in the interest of public peace, aiming to prevent any escalation of the situation.
