Unlocking Innovation: CSIR-NGRI to Launch Two Cutting-Edge Research Facilities to Transform Geological Science
The CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) has unveiled plans for two cutting-edge facilities aimed at enhancing its research capabilities in earth sciences. During the 65th foundation day celebration, Director Prakash Kumar announced the launch of the Laser Interferometer Seismological Observatory (LISO) and the Centre for Geothermal Energy Research (CGER). These initiatives signify CSIR-NGRI’s commitment to advancing two of the ten visionary goals set forth by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), emphasizing the institute’s pivotal role in India’s scientific landscape.
Kumar highlighted the strategic importance of these facilities in addressing critical challenges in geophysics and seismic research. He expressed admiration for the collaborative efforts of the scientific teams, specifically acknowledging their success during the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel rescue operation, a project that showcased their expertise and dedication in high-stakes scenarios.
Former director V.P. Dimri reflected on the institute’s illustrious history in his welcome address, detailing significant milestones such as earthquake hazard assessment in the Himalayas, groundwater exploration, and mineral resource investigations. Dimri’s insights underscored the depth of CSIR-NGRI’s contributions to understanding and mitigating geological risks in India.
Adding to the celebrations, Executive Director Harsh Gupta praised the institute’s release of the first Encyclopaedia of Solid Earth Geophysics, which represents a significant scholarly achievement. Gupta emphasized the pioneering research conducted on Himalayan earthquake hazards, which plays a vital role in disaster preparedness and risk assessment in one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
