Calls for Urgent Investigation: Assam Congress Demands Multi-Party Probe into Zubeen Garg’s Death
Assam’s Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, is urging the establishment of a multiparty House committee to investigate the death of famed singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19 under what he termed as “mysterious circumstances.” In a letter addressed to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary on October 13, Saikia expressed that the incident has left the people of Assam in shock, raising numerous unresolved questions regarding the circumstances of Garg’s death.
Saikia emphasized that the public is confused about various inconsistencies in the state’s explanation, pointing to potential conspiracy theories, inadequate security measures abroad, and a lack of medical facilities when Garg’s condition became critical. He also noted the failure to provide his family and the public with accurate information.
The Congress leader asserted that the people of Assam deserve a transparent inquiry into the singer’s demise. “His family and the public demand the truth, and the entire state is united in calling for #JusticeForZubeen. It is our duty as elected representatives to ensure this matter is addressed and lead the way,” he wrote.
Saikia highlighted that the Constitution permits the formation of a House committee on issues of public interest, insisting that Garg’s case warrants such a review. “The unexplained nature of the singer’s death, alongside circulating conspiracy theories, is a justifiable reason for a House committee to investigate. There have been precedents where similar committees have been formed,” he stated.
He proposed including representatives from all recognized political parties to maintain neutrality and independence within the committee. Additionally, he stated the committee should be empowered to summon witnesses, review documents, liaise with Singaporean authorities, and access all pertinent information. Saikia also recommended establishing a specific timeline for the inquiry and the submission of the final report.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most cherished artists, reportedly drowned while swimming in the sea in Singapore. His death has led to widespread mourning and speculation throughout the state, with fans and citizens demanding a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
