Paramedical staff at Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Andhra Pradesh have announced their decision to wear black badges starting Monday, in solidarity with striking PHC doctors. This demonstration was revealed during a roundtable organized by the A.P. PHC Doctors’ Association on Saturday, marking the seventh day of their ongoing relay hunger strike in Vijayawada.
The A.P. PHC Doctors’ Association has made it clear that if their concerns are not addressed by the State government, paramedical staff-comprising nurses and pharmacists at PHCs-will stage lunch-hour demonstrations. Medical officers from Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCs) have also voiced their support for the strike, highlighting the widespread backing from various healthcare associations.
Several organizations have rallied behind the PHC doctors, including the Directorate of Secondary Health Hospital Association, United Medical and Health Employees Association, Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association, and multiple employee associations tied to medical and health services. K.M.R. Kishore, state general secretary of the A.P. PHC Doctors’ Association, has urged the government to honor its previous commitments to the medical community. “This protest will continue until our basic rights are acknowledged and fulfilled,” Kishore stated.
The association has emphasized that their movement is apolitical, focused solely on legitimate grievances rather than opposition to the State government. They are calling for the government to approach their situation with empathy and urgency, urging immediate resolution of their issues.
As the situation stands, there are 1,142 PHCs in the state; however, only about 10% are being staffed by interns from medical colleges, who have been temporarily assigned in place of the protesting doctors. Many PHCs now find themselves functioning primarily with paramedical staff, lacking adequate medical personnel to meet the healthcare needs of local populations.
