Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha affirmed during the Hojagiri Festival in Santirbazar, South District, that the Reang community is the second largest Janajati group in Tripura, following the Tripuri community. He emphasized that the Reang Janajati migrated from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of present-day Bangladesh to Tripura long ago, with most currently residing in Tripura and others in Mizoram and Assam.
Despite this accurate historical account, misinformation has emerged, distorting the Chief Minister’s statements. Historical records confirm the accuracy of his remarks, leaving no room for doubt.
Contrastingly, statements from Tipra Motha MLA Philip Kumar Reang, MDC Bhaba Ranjan Reang, and Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of the Tipra Motha Party, seem to misinterpret history and spread inaccuracies. Their efforts to create division concerning the heritage of the Reang community are misguided and demonstrate a lack of understanding of the community’s extensive migratory and cultural background.
Suren Debbarman’s book, “Tripurar Adivashi: Jiban o Sangskriti” (Tribals of Tripura, Life and Culture), notes that the Reang community originally inhabited coastal areas and the banks of the Karnaphuli River in contemporary Bangladesh. They migrated to the Tripura kingdom during the reign of King Gobinda Manikya (1660–1667 AD) due to internal strife, with Queen Gunavarti Devi adopting the Reangs, elevating their status in Tripura’s history.
The book also traces their origins to the Shan State of Burma, indicating a gradual migration through the Chittagong Hill Tracts into Tripura in the 13th century. The Tribal Research and Cultural Institute of the Government of Tripura supports this, stating that the Reangs migrated from the Shan State of upper Burma (now Myanmar) in various waves before reaching Southern Tripura.
These well-documented historical facts robustly validate the Chief Minister’s statement. Prof. Dr. Manik Saha’s declarations reaffirm historical truths and underscore the lasting cultural significance of the Reang community in Tripura, serving as a reminder that misinformation cannot alter history.
