Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Friday plans to construct a pumped storage hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 2,400 MW in the Hnahthial district. Speaking at the general conference of the Mizo Students’ Union in Hnahthial town, he revealed that the project will be built across the Darzo Nallah, a tributary of the Tuipui River.

Once operational, this power plant is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the state’s increasing energy demands. Officials from the State Power and Electricity Department have projected the project’s cost to be approximately Rs 13,947.50 crore. The facility will be designed as an on-stream, closed-loop pumped storage system, featuring eight units, each with a capacity of 300 MW.

The plant is anticipated to generate an annual energy output of 4,993.20 million units (MU) while maintaining a 95 percent availability rate. In addition, Lalduhoma mentioned that the state government has allocated Rs 285 crore for the installation of a 132 kV transmission line, aimed at improving the district’s power supply.

He also noted that 10 percent of the project’s total cost will be financed by the central government under the Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) scheme. Currently, Mizoram lacks a significant power generation facility and relies heavily on electricity imports, primarily from Tripura, leading to an annual expenditure of around Rs 400 crore.
