Should Jasprit Bumrah Be Rested for the Crucial 2nd Test Against West Indies?
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has suggested that Jasprit Bumrah should be rested for the upcoming second Test against the West Indies, starting on Friday in New Delhi. Nayar emphasized the need to manage Bumrah’s workload, especially considering his importance to the team. He expressed concern that although Bumrah is likely to participate in the Test, it might be wise for him to take a break, given India’s future commitments including another Test series and the T20 World Cup.
Speaking to JioStar, Nayar noted that Bumrah’s exclusion from the ODI series against Australia signals India’s desire to secure a win against the West Indies, vital for the World Test Championship. “While I hope he gets some rest, it seems he will play this match,” he stated, emphasizing Bumrah’s value to the side.
Nayar also commented on KL Rahul’s performance, highlighting his century in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He praised Rahul’s improved mindset and attacking approach, which showcases his growth as a player. “KL knows the Delhi pitch well and plays with intent now,” Nayar remarked. He noted Rahul’s dissatisfaction despite scoring a century, pointing out a hunger for larger scores, which underscores his evolving game.
Wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel also impressed Nayar, who described him as “born for Test-level cricket” after his own century against the Windies. Nayar acknowledged the importance of not just scoring runs, but doing so with style and technique, which instills confidence in the player and the team.
Kuldeep Yadav showcased his talent by taking four wickets across both innings in the previous Test, significantly contributing to India’s innings victory. Nayar expressed confidence that Kuldeep would thrive in Delhi, where he has had success in the IPL and where the pitch suits his bowling style.
Yashasvi Jaiswal struggled to make an impact in the last match, scoring only 36 runs but demonstrated potential during his innings. Nayar believes Jaiswal is eager to convert his next opportunity into a significant score. “Once he gets going, he’s unstoppable,” Nayar affirmed, expecting a better performance in the second Test.
Sai Sudharsan, on the other hand, faced pressure to perform but managed only seven runs. Nayar pointed out that this series presents a critical chance for Sudharsan, especially with strong performances from his peers. He warned that upon Rishabh Pant’s return, Sudharsan’s spot might come under scrutiny if he cannot capitalize on this opportunity.
The second Test against the West Indies will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, a crucial encounter as the team looks to build momentum in the series.
