MP Pleads for Justice: Urgent Call for External Affairs Minister to Secure Release of Tamil Fishermen Held by Sri Lankan Navy

Member of Parliament V. Vaithilingam, also the head of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee, has urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to expedite the release of 12 Tamil fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, Vaithilingam detailed that the fishermen were apprehended around 2:40 a.m. on September 28.

Of the 12 fishermen detained, 10 hail from the Karaikal region of Puducherry, while the remaining two are from Tamil Nadu. “The entire fishing community of the Karaikal region is in deep distress and mental agony following this incident,” Vaithilingam expressed in his correspondence. He implored Minister Jaishankar to engage diplomatically with the Sri Lankan government to facilitate the fishermen’s release along with their boats.

This plea from Vaithilingam coincided with a similar request from Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also reached out to Jaishankar, emphasizing the urgency of securing the fishermen’s freedom. The community is deeply troubled, not only for their loved ones but also due to the implications this incident could have on local fishing livelihoods.

The apprehension of these fishermen has raised concerns within the local fishing community, which relies heavily on the waters for their sustenance and economic stability. The emotional toll of such detentions often extends beyond the immediate families, reverberating through the entire community.

Both Vaithilingam and Rangasamy are advocating for a swift diplomatic resolution to restore peace and normalcy for the affected families. They believe that effective communication through official channels can lead to a favorable outcome and the livelihoods of many depend on the prompt intervention by the Indian government.

As this situation unfolds, it highlights the ongoing complexities in the region concerning fishing rights and diplomatic relations with neighboring Sri Lanka. The request for intervention not only underscores the immediate need for action but also reflects broader issues affecting fishermen along the Indo-Sri Lankan maritime border.

The fishing communities of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are keenly awaiting developments on this matter, hoping for the swift return of their fellow fishermen. As the Indian government acts on these appeals, the resilience of the local communities remains a testament to their determination and solidarity in times of adversity.

In light of the tension surrounding this incident, the commitment from local leaders to pursue diplomatic engagement underscores the critical role of governmental support in safeguarding the rights and welfare of fishermen who frequently find themselves caught in complex geopolitical situations.

As the dialogue continues, stakeholders from both sides are encouraged to resolve the matter amicably, ensuring that the voices of fishermen and their families are heard and respected in the broader context of regional maritime affairs.
