From Mumbai to Triumph: Inspiring Sociology Student Captivates Hearts with Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize 2025
Mubashira Patel, a 26-year-old sociology student at Mumbai University, has been awarded the prestigious Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize for 2025. Out of 126 submissions, Patel’s work stood out to the jury, which included acclaimed poet and fiction writer Sharmistha Mohanty alongside two faculty members from the University of Hyderabad’s Department of English. This accolade recognizes emerging talent in English poetry and celebrates the creative voices of poets aged 20 to 40.
In addition to Patel’s remarkable achievement, the jury also extended a special mention to Abhilipsa Sahoo from Bhubaneswar for her noteworthy entry. The Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize was established in 2009 to honor excellence in poetry and to promote literary culture within the community.
The award carries a citation as well as a cash prize of ₹15,000, highlighting the value placed on artistic expression and encouraging poets to pursue their craft. The ceremony to honor the winners is scheduled for October 25, coinciding with the birth centenary of Srinivas Rayaprol, a celebrated figure in the literary world known for his contributions to both poetry and prose.
Patel expressed her gratitude for being recognized with such a significant award, noting how it motivates her to continue exploring and expressing her thoughts through poetry. “This recognition underscores the importance of poetry in capturing the essence of our experiences,” she stated.
The Srinivas Rayaprol Poetry Prize not only acknowledges individual talent but also serves as a platform for emerging poets to gain visibility in the literary landscape. By encouraging new voices, the prize aims to enrich the tapestry of contemporary English poetry and foster a community of writers dedicated to artistic excellence.
The literary community has welcomed Patel’s achievement, celebrating the diverse and rich contributions of young poets across India. As modern poetry continues to evolve, prizes like this play a crucial role in identifying and uplifting voices that reflect today’s nuances and complexities.
As we approach the award ceremony, anticipation builds within literary circles, emphasizing the need for ongoing support and recognition of young talent in the arts.
Published on September 30, 2025, this announcement marks a significant moment not just for Patel but for the larger poetic community as well, paving the way for future talent to thrive.
