Dayapur TE Rises to Action as Pallorbund TE Faces Lockout Crisis
Just days before Durga Puja, the future of 2,000 workers at the Pallorbund tea estate is clouded in uncertainty. The estate’s management unexpectedly declared a lockout at Pallorbund and its five associated gardens without any prior notice, leaving the workers’ livelihoods hanging in the balance. Fortunately, the Dayapur tea estate has agreed to manage the gardens on a temporary basis after intervention from the Barak Cha Shramik Union.
A meeting led by former MLA Rajdeep Goala, who serves as the General Secretary of the Union, and attended by district administration representatives, Provident Fund, Labour departments, and management from Dayapur, concluded that Dayapur Estate would temporarily oversee the Pallorbund gardens.
Workers at Pallorbund have claimed that they have not received salaries or rations for the past six months. Meanwhile, there are allegations that the management, after receiving a significant compensation from the government due to land acquisitions related to the Bharat Mala project, has vanished, exacerbating the workers’ plight.
