Suspended: Jailed Assam Officer Nupur Borah’s Controversial Fall from Grace
Nupur Borah, an Assam Civil Service officer, was suspended on Friday following her arrest connected to the seizure of ₹1.7 crore and jewelry from her residences in the state. The suspension came after she was taken into police custody for employing illegal methods while serving in the Barpeta district. On the same day, Borah was brought to the Goroimari circle office in Kamrup district, where she was last assigned.
Investigators from the Chief Minister’s vigilance cell collected numerous documents from the office, though details of the findings have not been disclosed. Prior to her suspension, officials had already uncovered ₹23 lakh from two of Borah’s bank lockers in Barpeta district. Since her arrest two days ago, investigators have been examining her finances to uncover a possible money trail linked to illegal land transfers conducted during her tenure in Barpeta.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that strict legal actions would be taken against Borah for allegedly amassing assets significantly exceeding her known income. At the time of her arrest, Borah, who served as Circle Officer in Goroimari, possessed wealth estimated to be nearly 400 times her official earnings. Sarma emphasized the seriousness of the corruption, stating that mere suspension or dismissal would not suffice.
“She had amassed wealth 400 times more than her known sources of income. We believe mere suspension or dismissal is not enough. She must face penal consequences through due legal process,” Sarma remarked during a public event in Baksa district.
The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell has conducted thorough searches at Borah’s homes in Guwahati and Barpeta, recovering ₹92.5 lakh in cash and gold and diamond ornaments valued at close to ₹1.5 crore. Senior Superintendent of Police Rosie Kalita noted that this cash recovery is the largest ever recorded by the vigilance cell. Investigators are also looking into ownership of three flats in Guwahati tied to Borah, among other properties under investigation.
Several individuals connected to these dealings are currently being questioned. Sarma mentioned that Borah had come under scrutiny approximately six months ago after allegedly authorizing an illegal land transfer while in Barpeta. Post-controversy, she was transferred to Goroimari in Kamrup, where continuous surveillance was conducted.
Sarma urged citizens to remain vigilant against corruption and to report any instances of bribery. He reiterated the government’s commitment to combating corruption, highlighting that investigations into Borah and her associates would be conducted transparently to ensure accountability within the administration.
