Meghalaya Congress Accuses MDA Government of Neglecting Women and Minorities
The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has sharply criticized the MDA Government for excluding women and minority representatives from its newly formed Cabinet. MPCC president Joplyn Shylla stated that this omission is an “insult” to women and other communities in Meghalaya, describing it as a betrayal of the state’s matrilineal society, where women are traditionally respected. Despite the significant participation of women in the workforce, Shylla emphasized that their absence in the Council of Ministers represents a glaring injustice.
Shylla accused the NPP-BJP-led government of engaging in “cartel politics” and sidelining women leaders for political expediency. She remarked that the government has concentrated power in the hands of a few instead of working to empower women, lamenting that the administration offers only lip service to women’s empowerment while practicing discrimination.
MPCC secretary Manuel Badwar echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the recent Cabinet reshuffle revealed the “invisible hand of the BJP.” He criticized the government for transforming into a cartel, where ministers and their families capitalize on their positions for personal gain rather than serving the public. Badwar reported that the most vulnerable populations are being excluded from progress and development.
Moreover, he asserted that women’s representation in governance is crucial for addressing contemporary issues, especially in light of rising crimes against women and children. He stated that having female ministers is essential for effectively understanding and responding to these challenges, asserting that their absence hinders the state’s ability to tackle such problems adequately.
Both Shylla and Badwar confirmed that the Congress party is not seeking defections from the ruling coalition but rather highlighting the Cabinet’s lack of balance and inclusivity. Shylla emphasized that governance should be representative, criticizing the current Cabinet as lopsided and failing to reflect the traditions and values of their society.
