Arunachal’s Urgent Deadline: Political Parties Must Appoint Election Agents by September 30

Political parties in Arunachal Pradesh must appoint booth-level agents at every polling station by September 30 as the state gears up for a comprehensive revision of its electoral rolls. Chief Electoral Officer Pawan Kumar Sain conveyed this mandatory requirement during a coordination meeting with party representatives on September 16. He highlighted that these agents will play a crucial role in ensuring accuracy during the intensive revision process.

The booth-level agents are required to collaborate with election officials to verify voter details and assist citizens in submitting applications for voter inclusion or objections. Each agent is permitted to submit up to 50 enumeration forms daily prior to the publication of the draft electoral roll.

“Political parties have a crucial responsibility in ensuring transparency and inclusivity throughout this process,” Sain remarked during the meeting, which was also attended by Joint Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu and Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Shania Kayem Mize.

The state election office has now made the final electoral roll from the last revision, dated January 1, 2006, available online for public verification. District Election Officers are actively conducting preparation exercises with booth-level officers across all districts.

During the meeting, party representatives raised concerns over managing duplicate entries and the procedures for voter enrollment. It was collectively agreed that the 11 identification documents approved by the Election Commission remain adequate for voter registration.

To facilitate the process, the election office plans to set up base camps in remote areas where supervisory teams will assist in uploading completed enumeration forms. A state-level training program for political parties, along with a public awareness campaign, will be announced in the future.

The revision of electoral rolls operates under constitutional laws, including Article 324, which grants supervisory authority to the Election Commission, and Article 326 concerning voter eligibility. The process also adheres to the Citizenship Act of 1955, defining citizenship criteria for individuals born after January 26, 1950.

District representatives have been directed to engage actively in discussions with election officers and ensure thorough documentation throughout the electoral revision process.
