Strengthening Ties: India and Thailand Unite Against Terrorism Together
The 14th edition of the India–Thailand joint military exercise, ‘Maitree,’ concluded on Sunday in Umroi, located in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district. This two-week exercise focused on enhancing interoperability and counter-terrorism capabilities between the participating forces. Conducted under a United Nations mandate, the exercise included a 48-hour validation phase, during which soldiers from the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army executed intricate operations. These operations involved establishing a temporary base, creating an intelligence and surveillance grid, isolating a village, conducting heliborne raids, and undertaking hostage rescue missions.
During the drills, both sides showcased advanced equipment, reflecting their commitment to modern military readiness. Defence officials noted that the exercise offered valuable insights into counter-terrorism tactics, peacekeeping operations, and the sharing of intelligence, alongside integrating cutting-edge battlefield technology.
The closing ceremony celebrated notable participants and featured cultural performances that highlighted the martial and artistic traditions of both nations. Additionally, friendly matches in volleyball, basketball, and tug-of-war fostered camaraderie among the troops.
A senior Indian Army officer described the exercise as a “resounding success,” emphasizing that it not only enhanced mutual understanding and operational cooperation between the two armies but also further strengthened bilateral relations between India and Thailand.
