Nagaland Teachers Rally for Pay Justice: Urgent Hunger Strike Planned
Teachers from the Nagaland RMSA-2016 batch have declared their intention to escalate protests, possibly including a hunger strike, until the government enacts pay scales that match those of their 2013 counterparts. As their demonstration enters the fifth day, frustration among educators mounts due to what they describe as years of government inaction.
Renbemo L. Patton, a spokesperson for the Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA), emphasized, “We will not call off this agitation unless our rightful demands are met. Several members have voluntarily expressed their readiness for a hunger strike to press for justice.” He criticized the government for utilizing a pending Supreme Court review petition as a strategy to delay addressing their concerns, labeling it “a clear tactic to sideline our legitimate demand.”
Imlitemjen Imchen, the NRMSATA president, corroborated this sentiment, noting the lengthy legal struggles they have endured. “It has been over seven years and seven months in litigation, and instead of resolving the matter amicably, the government continues to drag us to court,” he stated.
While the association remains open to negotiations, they are urging authorities to provide an immediate and practical solution. The teachers announced that protests would temporarily pause over the weekend but would resume on Monday if no progress is achieved.
The situation has intensified following a high-level meeting on Thursday between officials from the School Education department, including Commissioner and Secretary Kevileno Angami and Mission Director Samagra Shiksha Nagaland L. Jamithung Lotha, and NRMSATA representatives. Unfortunately, the discussions did not lead to any resolution, further escalating tensions.
The educators insist on government action consistent with the guidelines laid out by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the National Council of Teacher Education. They caution that ongoing delays may force them to resort to more drastic measures.
