Amlarem Faces Blackout Crisis: Rymbui Calls Out Power Failures, Urgent Upgrades Needed
Candlelight dinners, a luxury often enjoyed by city dwellers, have become a stark necessity for residents of Amlarem, a subdivision in the West Jaintia Hills district near the Bangladesh border. UDP legislator and former home minister Lahkmen Rymbui expressed this concern in the Assembly on Wednesday, highlighting the severe power shortages plaguing his constituency.
Rymbui emphasized that despite being home to two significant power projects, Lakroh and Leshka, residents of Amlarem face persistent power outages. He urged the government to implement urgent measures to address this ongoing crisis.
In response, Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal acknowledged these challenges and confirmed that corrective measures are in progress. He indicated that the ongoing disruptions in Amlarem, along with the Bakur–Dawki–Darrang belt, are largely attributed to adverse weather conditions. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds frequently damage power lines by snapping conductors and toppling trees that obstruct the power infrastructure, particularly in areas filled with betel nut, banana, and bamboo plantations.
Mondal further elaborated that planned shutdowns are currently being executed to facilitate system upgrades as part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and other related projects. Sixteen linemen and jugalis have been assigned to the Amlarem subdivision to respond to outages and restore power as swiftly as possible.
The minister added that the Syndai sub-station is set to be sanctioned soon to help alleviate the power crisis in Amlarem. He also assured that issues related to power supply in the Rajabala constituency of West Garo Hills district would be resolved within the year, coinciding with the activation of a new sub-station.
