Uncovering the Dark Truth: ED Raids Expose Shocking Sand Smuggling Racket Across West Bengal!
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a series of synchronized raids across West Bengal, including significant areas in Kolkata, on Monday, September 8, 2025. This operation targets individuals and businesses allegedly involved in an extensive sand smuggling racket, according to a senior ED official.
Raids have been executed in multiple locations such as Behala, Regent Park, Bidhannagar, and Kalyani, focusing on uncovering illicit activities linked to this scam. Accompanying the ED officials were a large contingent of central security forces, emphasizing the seriousness of the operation.
Central to the investigation is Sheikh Jahirul, a key figure in the sand smuggling network based in Jhargram district. ED agents have begun searches at his expansive residence situated near the Subarnarekha River in Gopiballavpur. “Searches are currently underway at Jahirul’s home, office, and vehicles. He stands accused of extensive involvement in illegal sand extraction and trade operations,” stated the official.
Jahirul, who previously served as a village police officer, has since transitioned into the sand mining industry, operating several mines. The ED is also targeting other sand mine owners in the Beliaberia and Jamboni blocks of Jhargram district, indicating a broader effort to dismantle the underground trade.
“The focus of this operation is to unveil the financial networks that are fueling the illegal sand trade. We believe that substantial profits from this racket have found their way into various insurance companies and business ventures,” the official added. As part of their investigation, ED agents are meticulously examining business records, financial documents, and properties associated with key individuals linked to the operation.
This crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts by the ED to combat organized crime in the region, especially activities that pose a threat to the environment and local economies. With the sand smuggling racket reportedly having widespread implications, the outcome of these raids could be pivotal in curbing illicit practices in West Bengal.
As the situation develops, further updates are anticipated, with the ED poised to provide more information on the findings and potential arrests stemming from these coordinated efforts.
