Churachandpur Roads Ready for PM Modi’s Anticipated Visit
Guwahati: After being neglected for over two and a half years, the roads in Churachandpur have finally been repaired, eliciting mixed reactions from residents. This sudden push for infrastructure upgrades is widely interpreted as preparation for a potential visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Manipur later this month.
While locals appreciate the improved connectivity, their sentiments are far from joyful. Many residents feel resentment, recalling the Centre’s inaction during Manipur’s severe episodes of violence and unrest over the past two years. “The roads are fixed, but our hearts still bleed,” said one resident, encapsulating the community’s lingering feelings of neglect.
The timing of these repairs coincides with critical discussions in New Delhi regarding the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Kuki-Zo insurgent groups. Negotiations that began on September 3 are expected to wrap up today. Sources suggest that the MHA is likely to extend the ceasefire arrangement, despite pushback from Meitei groups who allege that Kuki-Zo militants have breached the ground rules amid ongoing ethnic strife.
The talks took place under stringent security, with Union representatives Rajesh Kambley, Joint Director (North East) of the Home Ministry, and A.K. Mishra, Interlocutor and Advisor for the North East, at the helm. Additional Director General of Police Ashutosh Kumar and a senior state home department officer also represented Manipur, which has been under President’s Rule since February 2025.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi is slated to visit Assam on September 13, leading to speculation that he may also make a stop in Manipur. This possibility has sparked divided opinions in Churachandpur, where the repaired roads present clear benefits, yet unresolved grievances against the Centre linger.
As Manipur waits for clarity on both the SoO extension and Modi’s travel plans, these developments underscore the delicate balance between showcasing progress and addressing the deep-rooted ethnic and political tensions that persist in the region.
