In a significant achievement against Maoist insurgency, 20 Maoist leaders surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, armed and with a total bounty of 3.3 million rupees placed on their heads, as reported by the police on Wednesday. This mass surrender is seen as a major success for law enforcement amid ongoing operations against Maoists across various states, including Chhattisgarh.
According to police sources, among those who surrendered today were nine women. The authorities identified two leaders, Sharmila alias Bikash Bhuyim (25) and Tati Koci alias Promila (20), with a bounty of 800,000 rupees each. Another leader, 54-year-old Muchaka Hudma, had a bounty of 500,000 rupees on his head. Additionally, four other leaders had bounties of 400,000 rupees each, while several others had bounties of 100,000 rupees. The surrendered Maoists will reportedly receive financial assistance amounting to 50,000 rupees, along with job opportunities and other forms of support under the Maoist rehabilitation policy.
In related news, the Chhattisgarh government recently amended the “Naxal Surrender and Victim Rehabilitation Policy 2025,” compelling Maoists to abandon their arms. The new policy offers rehabilitation, job placements, financial rewards, and legal protection to those who surrender. Benefits are determined based on the ranks of the Maoist leaders, with top-tier cadres like members of state, regional, or central councils and the Politburo receiving a one-time grant of 500,000 rupees. Those surrendering with light machine guns are also eligible for a cash reward of 500,000 rupees. If 80 percent of a Maoist unit surrenders collectively, the rewards are doubled. This rehabilitation package includes support for job placements and education for children.
