Heartfelt Solidarity: AAP Leaders Donate One Month’s Salary Amidst Punjab Floods, While Congress and SAD Appeal to PM Modi
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal has announced that party legislators and members of Parliament will donate their one-month salaries to the Punjab Chief Minister’s Relief Fund amid severe flooding that has impacted the state. In a heartfelt video message shared on social media platform X, Kejriwal called for unity, urging all political parties and the central government to assist the flood-affected residents of Punjab during this challenging time.
“Punjab has always stood tall in the face of any crisis faced by the nation. Today, Punjab itself is in crisis. I appeal to all my fellow countrymen to extend every possible help to the people of Punjab in this difficult time,” Kejriwal stated. He emphasized the importance of collective action, encouraging everyone to come together and support Punjab to navigate this tragedy.
The state is currently grappling with devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, as well as seasonal rivulets in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The hardest-hit districts include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar, where entire villages are under water, leading to widespread destruction and despair.
In parallel, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting an urgent flood relief package for the state. In his correspondence, Warring highlighted the extreme devastation caused by the floods, stating that almost the entire Punjab is affected, with forecasts suggesting more rain may complicate recovery efforts. “The estimated loss runs into thousands of crores of rupees,” Warring noted, emphasizing the critical need for immediate assistance. He further asserted that Punjab doesn’t seek preferential treatment but rather its rightful due as a frontline border state vital for national security and food supply.
Similarly, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has called on PM Modi to allocate a special relief package and bolster national disaster response efforts in Punjab. Following a recent visit to affected areas, Badal reported that vast expanses of agricultural land have been submerged, with extensive damage to thousands of homes, infrastructure, and utilities. He has also urged the prime minister to send dedicated teams to address health concerns arising from prolonged flooding.
As the situation develops, the urgency for assistance grows, underscoring the need for immediate and effective intervention from both state and central governments. With the state facing unprecedented challenges, local leaders continue to advocate for support, rallying solidarity in a bid to help Punjab recover from this natural disaster.
