Gurgaon Monsoon Chaos: 100mm Rain Causes Major Jams and Waterlogging
National Highway 48, also known as the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, experienced severe traffic congestion and long queues due to continuous rainfall in Millennium City. The situation was similarly dire on Golf Course Road, which faced waterlogging earlier in the day. To address the chaos, Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar, Police Commissioner Vikas Arora, and DCP Traffic Rajesh Mohan were deployed to the highway to oversee efforts to alleviate the traffic situation. Other deputy commissioners were assigned to manage traffic regulation across different stretches of the city.
Between 3 PM and 7 PM on Monday, some areas recorded over 100 mm of rain, with Wazirabad tehsil registering 116 mm from 8 AM to 6 PM. The resulting traffic jams on the National Highway garnered widespread criticism, especially after videos of the situation circulated online. Randeep Singh Surjewala, a Congress MP and General Secretary of the Indian National Congress, lamented the apparent failure of the government to manage the crisis, referring to it as a “triple engine” government failure.
Surjewala tweeted, “Two hours of rain = 20 kilometers of Gurgaon Jam! As CM Nayab Saini only flies in a ‘State Helicopter’ and doesn’t travel on the roads, this is a ‘helicopter shot’ of the Highway in Gurgaon just now. So much for rain preparedness and the crores of public money spent on drainage, sewage, and traffic management. This is BJP’s ‘triple engine model’ of Millennium City urban development.” Marketing consultant Suhel Seth chimed in, calling the administration a “Mickey Mouse Government.”
Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT) and outspoken opposition leader, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Millennium City Gurugram. A double engine sarkar with a double the failure track record.” Major General (Dr.) Yash Mor, a retired Indian Army veteran based in the city, reported that roads were completely choked, with drivers stuck for hours as nearly all major roads remained jammed.
Further rain began at 11:40 PM, compounding the problems. Earlier in the day, the Gurugram Municipal Corporation and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority announced that they were deploying teams to clear drains and road gullies and using suction pumps in key areas to tackle the flooding.
Communications consultant Ishan Mohan described how what usually takes a 15 to 20-minute drive from DLF Phase 5 to his home in sector 31 turned into a two-and-a-half-hour ordeal. Amid the chaos, he noted how ordinary citizens stepped up to help manage traffic. PR professional Ashna Malpe shared her experience of starting a new job in the city amid this disruption. Despite having encountered heavier rains in Mumbai, she noted the severe impact of the knee-deep water on the streets, making it feel as though she was navigating a boat rather than a car.
