Ex-VP Jagdeep Dhankhar Seeks MLA Pension: Uncover His Party Legacy & Astonishing Financial Benefits!

Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has submitted a request to resume his pension as a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Rajasthan. His pension was halted in 2019 when he took on the role of Governor of West Bengal. Dhankhar, who is 74 years old, was first elected as an MLA in 1993, representing the Kishangarh seat in Ajmer district for a full term until 1998.

On July 21, Dhankhar resigned as Vice President, citing medical reasons shortly after presiding over the Rajya Sabha session on the first day of the Monsoon Parliament session. Having assumed the Vice Presidency on August 11, 2022, he was expected to serve the position for five years, until August 2027.

Following his resignation, Dhankhar has now filed an application with the State Assembly Secretariat seeking his MLA pension. Preliminary reports indicate that the review and approval process for his application is currently underway.

So, what pension can Dhankhar expect? The pension for Rajasthan MLAs who serve full terms is set at ₹35,000 per month. Given that Dhankhar is over 70, he qualifies for a 20% increase, bringing his monthly pension to ₹42,000 along with additional benefits like medical care and travel allowances. This pension will commence from the date of his resignation as Vice President. Notably, this amount will be in addition to his pensions as a former Vice President and Member of Parliament (MP).

Reflecting on his political journey, Dhankhar’s affiliation with parties has evolved over the years. Initially part of the Janata Dal, he served as an MP from Jhunjhunu during the 9th Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. He then switched to the Congress party, representing them in the Rajasthan Assembly from 1993 to 1998. Although he contested the 1991 general elections, he lost. His re-entry into politics came with his election to the Rajasthan Assembly, after which he faced a setback in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections but joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2003.

Dhankhar’s political career further advanced when he was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal on July 20, 2019. Upon being made the NDA’s vice-presidential candidate, he resigned from the gubernatorial post in July 2022.

Since stepping down from his role as Vice President, Dhankhar has largely stayed out of the public eye, leading to speculation about his future political ambitions. His absence has not gone unnoticed, with the Opposition, particularly the Congress party, raising questions regarding his continued visibility in the political arena.
