Empowering Young Doctors: Join the AML Masterclass at BBCI, Guwahati
The Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in Guwahati hosted a one-day conference on Saturday that spotlighted the latest advancements in diagnosing and managing Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Organized by the Department of Medical Oncology (Adult Hematology), the event featured Dr. Asif Iqbal as the Organizing Secretary and Dr. Munlima Hazarika as the Organizing President. The conference attracted esteemed speakers from across India, including Dr. Gaurav Prakash from PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr. Arijit Nag from TMC, Kolkata, Dr. Uday Kulkarni from CMC, Vellore, as well as Drs. Gaurav Chatterjee and Lingaraj Nayak from TMH, Mumbai. They were joined by 19 distinguished faculty members from Guwahati and Shillong.
Throughout the day, attendees participated in a range of plenary talks and interactive case discussions covering a variety of subjects. These included risk stratification frameworks, cutting-edge diagnostic techniques such as flow cytometry and next-generation sequencing, and the assessment of measurable residual disease. The discussions also explored novel agents, transplant strategies, and supportive care. The faculty focused on practical approaches designed for the Indian context, with the aim of improving early diagnosis, ensuring timely referrals, granting equitable access to transplants, and effectively incorporating new therapies within public and teaching hospitals.
The audience consisted of 90 postgraduate delegates specializing in Hematology, Pathology, Hemato-Pathology, and Transfusion Medicine, who gained significant insights during the sessions. These discussions aimed to provide valuable clinical insights for busy residents, improve everyday transfusion practices, and promote multidisciplinary coordination among clinicians, pathologists, and transfusion services.
Looking ahead, BBCI plans to share key takeaways from the masterclass with teaching departments and continue similar capacity-building initiatives in the future. The institute has also invited trainees to engage in ongoing academic activities within BBCI’s Adult Hematology services, reinforcing the message that disciplined protocols and teamwork can lead to improved outcomes for AML patients across the region.
