Urgent Insights: Trade Infra Needs at Nathu La Border Revealed
In a significant step to enhance infrastructure and trade connectivity in the strategic border areas of Sikkim, Pamin Lepcha, MLA of Gnathang-Machong and advisor for social welfare, led a high-level joint inspection on Thursday. This focused on essential locations within the Gnathang Gram Panchayat Unit, specifically targeting the Tsomgo Lake area, Sherathang, and the Nathu La border region to address development challenges and improve regional trade infrastructure.
Accompanying MLA Lepcha were senior officials from various departments. Notable attendees included Karma Yutso Bhutia, the secretary of the Commerce and Industries department, along with her technical team, Y.N. Gautam, principal chief engineer of the Buildings and Housing department, and K.C. Sharma, principal chief engineer of the Roads and Bridges department. Additional key figures were the additional chief engineer Dibya Gurung, and Divisional Forest Officers SK Thatal and Pem Diki Sherpa, each with their teams.
The inspection primarily revolved around Sherathang Mart, an important economic and logistical hub near the Indo-China border. This site plays a vital role in facilitating cross-border trade during the trading season. The inspection assessed multiple infrastructural aspects, focusing on the condition of roads connecting Sherathang to Nathula. Officials evaluated these routes for structural integrity and their ability to withstand all-weather conditions.
Attention was also given to power supply and electrical infrastructure. The officials noted ongoing issues with unstable power supply and discussed plans to modernize the current electrical grid to support sustained operations, particularly during peak trading periods. Moreover, the team assessed the existing mart houses and shopping complexes, highlighting the urgent need for renovations and expansions to accommodate increasing trade activity.
Additionally, the inspection looked at essential amenities and supportive infrastructure, focusing on sanitation, water supply, waste management, and facilities for both traders and tourists. These components are critical for bolstering economic activity and improving the overall standard of living in the region.
MLA Lepcha underscored the strategic importance of Sherathang and its surrounding areas for both economic development and national security. She emphasized the need for coordinated efforts across departments to address these challenges comprehensively and efficiently.
