NH-702 Alignment Finalized: Essential Connectivity for Nagaland’s Bypassed Villages
A high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang on August 28 addressed the longstanding issue regarding the alignment of National Highway 702 (NH-702), which links Longleng, Longching, Mon, and Tizit. After reviewing the technical evaluations provided by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the meeting determined that Alignment Option 3 was the most technically viable option.
To ensure continued connectivity for the villages along the 19 km segment that will be bypassed by the new route, Zeliang instructed the Chairman of the Border Roads Network Action Plan (BRNAP) and the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) to form a special committee that includes members from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), NHIDCL, and the Public Works Department (PWD). This committee will suggest that the BRO assume responsibility for maintaining the existing road segment.
Zeliang characterized the decision as a “win-win for progress and inclusivity,” emphasizing that it balances the necessity for modern road infrastructure with the need to preserve access for local communities.
Attending the meeting were local MLAs Manpon Konyak, Nyemnyei Konyak, and Naiba Konyak, along with senior officials from Works and Housing, NHIDCL, and BRO, as well as representatives from the Konyak Union. The government underscored that promptly executing the NH-702 project is essential for enhancing connectivity and the overall quality of life in Nagaland’s border districts.
