Assam Rifles Strike: Major Extortion Ring Uncovered at Manipur Border
Security forces have achieved a major breakthrough against organized crime in Manipur, capturing a key suspect linked to extortion and arms trafficking. The arrest occurred on August 26 during a coordinated operation involving the Assam Rifles, local police, and paramilitary units in Haolenphai, close to the vital border town of Moreh in Tengnoupal district. The suspect is purportedly affiliated with the Village Volunteers Eastern Zone (VVEZ), a group that has faced scrutiny for its criminal activities.
The operation was initiated based on actionable intelligence, prompting security teams to execute a coordinated cordon and search operation in the early morning. Officials praised the meticulous house-to-house searches, noting their “precision and tactical acumen” while exercising restraint in the delicate border region.
During the operation, authorities seized a mobile phone believed to contain vital evidence of the extortion network’s activities and weapons smuggling. This device is expected to be crucial in dismantling the broader criminal syndicate operating across the porous Indo-Myanmar border.
This successful mission marks a significant victory for security forces, who are striving to dismantle criminal networks that exploit the region’s strategic location and ongoing ethnic tensions. These groups have reportedly extorted money from local residents and businesses while facilitating illegal arms trades across international boundaries.
Following the arrest, the suspect was transferred to the Pallel Police Station in Kakching district on August 27 for further interrogation and potential prosecution under relevant laws.
