Ajay Kumar Bhalla Takes Office as Nagaland Governor Amid Ongoing Boycott
Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Governor of Manipur, was sworn in as the 22nd Governor of Nagaland on August 25 at Raj Bhavan, following the passing of Governor La Ganesan. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar of the Gauhati High Court. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Ministers TR Zeliang and Y Patton, along with ministers, MLAs, and senior officials.
Immediately after the swearing-in, Bhalla convened his inaugural meeting with the state cabinet at Raj Bhavan and inspected a ceremonial guard of honour. A reception ensued during which political leaders, church representatives, tribal organizations, and civil society groups conveyed their congratulations to the new governor.
However, members of the Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CORRP), who represent the Ao, Angami, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi tribes, were notably absent. This committee has been advocating for changes to the state’s long-standing job reservation system, which has remained in place for over four decades.
In response to ongoing concerns, the government recently established a Reservation Review Commission. Nonetheless, the committee has rejected this initiative, insisting on the inclusion of tribal and civil society representatives in the process.
