The Planetarium in Kozhikode, a key attraction at the Regional Science Centre, is set to undergo a significant transformation with plans for a hybrid upgrade expected to cost between ₹20 and 22 crore. Tenders for this innovative project have already been floated, paving the way for a fully integrated, immersive 2D full-dome planetarium experience that enthusiasts-especially children-can look forward to within the next year.
Project Coordinator Minnal Munikumar Balaji expressed enthusiasm about the installation of a state-of-the-art digital projector alongside a conventional projector. “This upgrade will allow us to provide real-time observations of the night sky, as well as showcase recorded videos,” he said. Balaji also noted that the renovation will include replacing the seating and dome, enhancing visitors’ overall experience.
One of the distinguishing features of the upcoming upgrade is the customization of equipment to meet local preferences. “Manufacturers are tasked with tailoring content in Malayalam, Hindi, and English,” Balaji added, emphasizing the planetarium’s commitment to making educational content accessible to a diverse audience.
As one of the largest and most popular planetariums in the country, the Kozhikode facility is operated under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Culture. The anticipated improvements are expected to deliver a clearer and more captivating visual and auditory experience for all visitors.
