Streaming Shock: Apple TV+ Raises Price to $13 a Month-Brace for Impact!
Apple TV+ is set to increase its subscription prices by 30%, marking its second price hike in less than a year. Starting August 21, new users will pay $12.99 per month, while existing subscribers will notice the increase on their next billing cycle. This shift comes amid growing competition in the streaming industry, where Apple aims to distinguish its service with a focus on original programming free of advertisements.
Apple justifies the price increase by highlighting the expansion of its content library, which now includes an array of award-winning originals and live sports offerings. The company emphasizes the exclusive nature of its programming, featuring “hundreds of Apple Originals” across genres like drama, sci-fi, comedy, and sports-an approach that departs from the traditional model of relying on older, licensed content.
Since its launch in November 2019 with an introductory rate of $4.99, Apple TV+ has steadily raised prices. The subscription fee climbed to $6.99 in October 2022, then to $9.99, and now to the upcoming $12.99. Despite receiving critical acclaim-boasting significant Emmy nominations for shows like “Severance” and the hit comedy “The Studio”—the service reportedly incurs losses exceeding $1 billion annually due to heavy investments in original content.
Apple maintains its stance as a premium service, opting not to offer a lower-priced, ad-supported tier like many of its competitors, including Netflix and Disney+. This strategic decision aims to deliver a streamlined, ad-free viewing experience, which Apple believes adds value to its subscriber base. “Since its launch, Apple TV+ has expanded its deep library of hundreds of Apple Originals, with thousands of hours of premium programming across genres and brand-new releases weekly-all ad-free,” the company stated.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to debut significant new content that could justify the price hike. Season 4 of “The Morning Show” premieres on September 17, followed by Season 5 of “Slow Horses” on September 24. Fans can also expect the arrival of Vince Gilligan’s highly anticipated project, “Pluribus,” on November 7. Additionally, new films like “Highest 2 Lowest” (September 5) and “The Lost Bus” (October 3) join an already strong catalog.
The question remains whether subscribers will accept the increased cost. Apple is banking on the allure of new seasons and critically acclaimed originals to retain its audience, hoping that a steady stream of quality content will justify the higher monthly fee.
As this price change takes effect, the stark contrast between Apple TV+ and other streaming giants becomes more apparent, particularly in a market that increasingly favors ad-supported options. Whether this strategy will pay off for Apple in the long run remains to be seen as viewers weigh the value of content against the rising costs of subscription services.
