US President Donald Trump announced that, following his recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he is shifting from demanding a ceasefire to pursuing a direct peace agreement to end the Ukraine War. In a late-night call on Friday with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders, Trump stated on Truth Social that it was collectively determined that a peace agreement is the more effective route. He emphasized, “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which oftentimes do not hold up.”
Despite this, European leaders and Zelensky are expressing skepticism about any negotiations that do not incorporate an immediate ceasefire. They worry that without halting hostilities, Russia may seize more Ukrainian territory, thereby strengthening its negotiating stance. Trump indicated his intention to address Putin’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine while diplomatic talks continue, asserting that the summit in Alaska was “very successful” and that his conversations with Zelensky and other European leaders went “very well.” He announced that Zelensky is scheduled to visit the White House on Monday, stating, “If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin.”
Trump did not disclose the “most significant” point of contention with Putin that hindered a potential agreement. He pointed out that while there are “a couple of big ones” yet to be resolved, they have made progress and expressed optimism about reaching a consensus. Notably, Trump appeared to retract earlier statements insisting on a ceasefire as a prerequisite for further discussions. On his flight to Alaska, he stated, “I want to see a ceasefire rapidly,” adding his disappointment if it did not happen soon.
Zelensky, sharing his thoughts on social media, reiterated that European leaders are aligned in their desire for a swift ceasefire. He remarked, “The positions are clear. We need to achieve real peace that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions.” He also underscored the urgency of stopping violence, calling for a cessation of actions on the battlefield and in the skies, as well as against Ukraine’s port infrastructure. Zelensky additionally urged Trump to consider strengthening sanctions against Russia if discussions with Putin do not lead to meaningful outcomes.
The leaders of Europe, self-designated as “The Coalition of the Willing,” released a joint statement after their discussions with Trump, noting their support for his efforts to curb violence in Ukraine. They affirmed the necessity for Ukraine to receive strong security guarantees to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They emphasized, “As President Trump said, ‘there’s no deal until there’s a deal.’” The next steps, as outlined by the European leaders, will include further talks that involve Zelensky.
French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the previous discussions, highlighted the coalition’s resolve to maintain pressure on Russia until a firm and lasting peace is achieved, one that respects Ukraine’s rights. Macron also reiterated the commitment to work collaboratively with Trump and Zelensky to protect their shared interests.
