Manipur Governor Engages UNC Leaders on Urgent Border Fencing Issues
The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, met with representatives from the United Naga Council (UNC) on Saturday to discuss the ongoing border fencing issue and the repeal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border. During the meeting, UNC president Ng Lorho led a delegation that expressed concerns regarding the FMR and the border fencing, urging the Governor to address these matters with the Government of India.
Governor Bhalla reassured the UNC that discussions have already been initiated with the Ministry of Home Affairs. He encouraged the council members to maintain peace and exercise restraint while a constructive dialogue is ongoing. The meeting also included Sumant Singh, Secretary to the Governor, and N Ashok Kumar, Commissioner (Home) of Manipur.
After the talks, UNC president Lorho informed the media that the Governor had listened attentively and confirmed that the issue has been escalated at the national level. Both parties agreed to reconvene for further discussions within three days.
Lorho emphasized that the UNC has been voicing its concerns to the Government of India for an extended period without satisfactory responses. The council’s primary demand is the reinstatement of the FMR and the cessation of border fencing construction on Naga territories, which they deem unacceptable. He insisted that any border adjustments must be rectified before fencing can be erected at the traditional boundary shared with Myanmar.
Additionally, Lorho stated that construction of the border fencing has already commenced between border pillars 80 and 81, extending about 10 kilometers into Naga areas, despite significant resistance from the local Naga community. The UNC, as the leading Naga organization in the state, continues to call for halting the border fencing and repeal of the FMR. They previously issued a 20-day ultimatum to the Governments of India and Manipur, which expired on August 12, warning of an indefinite economic blockade along national highways in Naga territories should their demands remain unmet.
Other delegates from the UNC who attended the meeting included vice-president N Gonmei Poujan, general secretary Vareiyo Shatsang, information and publicity secretary H James Hau, and other representatives from the Naga Women Union and the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur.
