A recent study suggests that moderate egg consumption may enhance heart health by boosting beneficial metabolites in the blood. Researchers found that individuals who regularly included eggs in their diet exhibited higher levels of “good lipoprotein” and larger HDL (high-density lipoprotein) molecules, which may facilitate the removal of cholesterol from blood vessels. These findings imply a possible protective effect against cardiovascular diseases, an increasingly pressing concern worldwide.
The debate around whether eggs are beneficial for heart health has persisted for years. A 2022 study published in the eLife journal indicated that consuming eggs increases heart-healthy metabolites in the blood, which could clarify their protective role against cardiovascular diseases when eaten in moderation. Furthermore, older research from 2018, focusing on half a million adults in China, revealed that daily egg consumption substantially reduced the risk of heart disease and stroke compared to those who ate fewer eggs.
To investigate the relationship between egg consumption and cardiovascular health markers, a population-based study was conducted involving 4,778 individuals from the China Kadoorie Biobank, where 3,401 had cardiovascular disease and 1,377 did not. By utilizing targeted nuclear magnetic resonance, researchers assessed 225 blood metabolites and identified 24 that correlated with self-reported egg consumption levels. They discovered that those who consumed eggs moderately had increased levels of apolipoprotein A1, a protein associated with HDL, which aids in clearing cholesterol from blood vessels.
The study identified 14 metabolites uniquely linked to heart disease and noted that participants who consumed fewer eggs had lower levels of beneficial metabolites and higher levels of harmful ones compared to regular egg consumers. According to Canqing Yu, one of the study’s authors, these results offer an explanation regarding how moderate egg intake may mitigate the risk of heart disease. However, further research is necessary to establish the causal relationships between lipid metabolites and cardiovascular risk associated with egg consumption.
The findings may also influence dietary guidelines in China, where current recommendations suggest consuming one egg daily, while the average intake is less than that. Senior author Liming Li emphasizes the need for initiatives to promote moderate egg consumption among the population to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease overall.
