Violent Mob Attack in Assam’s Hojai Injures 14 Police Officers, 7 Arrested
At least 14 police personnel, including an officer with the rank of Inspector, were injured following a mob attack on a police team in the Digholbali area of Assam’s Hojai district on Tuesday, August 12. The violence erupted when locals detained a heavy vehicle and its driver. In response, the police dispatched a team to the location to assist the driver. However, an argument ensued between the officers and some residents, quickly escalating into violence as more individuals gathered to confront the police.
Akhilesh Singh, the Inspector General of Police (Law & Order), provided updates on the situation, stating, “Many more people came to the area and vandalised police vehicles and attacked police personnel. Fourteen police personnel were injured in the incident, and three police vehicles were damaged.” Singh confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, naming 10 individuals, of whom seven have already been apprehended. He added that he visited the site personally both last night and this morning, ensuring that the situation is now under control, with ongoing investigations.
To maintain peace in the area, additional police forces have been deployed while inquiries continue to identify and arrest the remaining suspects.
