Transforming Travel: Air India’s $400 Million Revamp of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners Promises an Exceptional Experience!

Air India is embarking on a substantial upgrade of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet as part of a $400 million modernization initiative aimed at enhancing reliability and passenger comfort. The airline’s announcement follows a series of moves to revamp its older aircraft, including a refurbishment project for its legacy Airbus A320neo jets, with both efforts designed to minimize operational disruptions.

The timing of this fleet enhancement is particularly notable, coming just after the tragic June 12 crash of an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London, which resulted in the loss of 260 lives when the 787-8 Dreamliner went down moments after takeoff. In light of this incident, the reliability upgrade for the Boeing 787-8s will involve significant updates to avionics and the replacement of essential components to align with the latest industry standards.

As part of these upgrades, seven of the airline’s 26 Dreamliners will undergo extensive scheduled maintenance. Air India anticipates that these enhancements will boost operational reliability, especially for long-haul international routes. “The retrofits will bring our older aircraft up to the standards of the newest in our fleet,” stated an Air India spokesperson. “Passengers will notice improved comfort, and our crews will benefit from more reliable operations.”

On the Airbus A320neo front, the retrofit program, which commenced in September 2024, remains on track. This undertaking involves a total of 27 legacy A320neo aircraft, each being outfitted with modernized cabins. The upgraded interiors are expected to significantly enhance the flying experience, allowing these jets to efficiently serve vital domestic and short-haul international routes. Since expanding operations at GMR’s MRO facility in Hyderabad, the pace of this narrowbody project has accelerated.

As of August 9, 2025, 16 A320neo aircraft have successfully completed their retrofits. The 15th aircraft returned to service on August 9, with the 16th scheduled to follow shortly. The remaining 11 jets are slated for completion by September 2025.

These retrofitting efforts form part of a broader transformation strategy initiated by the Tata Group, which took over Air India in early 2022. The airline has also set ambitious goals, having placed record orders for new aircraft and investing in upgraded digital systems, crew training, and improved ground operations.

“This is not just about new seats or fresher cabins; it’s about ensuring reliability, reducing delays, and giving passengers a better experience overall,” the spokesperson emphasized. “When the retrofit program concludes next year, our fleet will be better positioned to meet the demands of a growing network.”

Anticipated to conclude by September 2025, the aircraft upgrades will be gradually introduced into service over the forthcoming months, reflecting Air India’s commitment to modernizing its operations and enhancing travel experiences for its customers.
