India’s Smartphone Market Soars in Q2 2025: Experience the Exciting Rise of the Premium Segment!

India’s smartphone market experienced a slight year-on-year growth of 0.9% in the first half of 2025, with shipments reaching 70 million units, according to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). The second quarter of the year showed promising signs of recovery, as shipments climbed to 37 million units, a significant 7.3% increase compared to the same period last year. However, IDC cautioned that ongoing challenges such as subdued consumer demand and rising average selling prices (ASPs) might hinder annual growth prospects.

Apple made headlines with a remarkable 21.5% year-on-year increase in shipments, totaling 5.9 million units in the first half of the year. The iPhone 16 emerged as the best-selling smartphone in India, capturing 4% of the overall market shipments. In the competitive super-premium segment, defined as devices priced at $800 and above, the market grew by 15.8%, holding a consistent 7% share. Interestingly, Samsung regained the lead in the overall market with a dominant 49% share, slightly ahead of Apple’s 48%. Key models contributing to sales in this segment included the iPhone 16, Galaxy S25, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

“Q2 2025 witnessed a surge of new product launches across various price tiers, complemented by strategic price reductions on older models and increased marketing efforts,” remarked Aditya Rampal, Senior Research Analyst at IDC Asia Pacific. This activity spurred growth amidst an increasingly competitive landscape.

The ASP for smartphones in the second quarter reached a record $275, reflecting a notable 10.8% year-on-year increase. The entry-level segment, categorized as devices priced under $100, shone brightly with a 22.9% growth, boosting its market share from 14% to 16%. Xiaomi maintained its lead in this segment with popular Redmi A4 and A5 models.

The premium segment, priced between $600 and $800, posted the highest growth rate, skyrocketing by 96.4% and doubling its market share from 2% to 4%. Together, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 accounted for an impressive three-fifths of shipments within this category.

Conversely, the mass-budget segment, defined as smartphones priced between $100 and $200, saw only a marginal growth of 1.1% year-on-year. This segment’s market share declined from 44% to 42%, despite Vivo, OPPO, and Realme continuing to dominate, collectively holding a substantial 60% market share.

As India’s smartphone landscape evolves, it is evident that market dynamics are shifting, influenced by both global trends and local consumer preferences. With new products and competitive pricing strategies on the horizon, the second half of 2025 promises to be equally intriguing for smartphone enthusiasts and industry stakeholders alike.
