Uncovering Allegations: Bogus Voters Threaten Assam’s Stability
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns about the accuracy of voters’ lists in the state’s riverine areas and other localities, claiming that they contain names of deceased individuals and residents who have moved elsewhere. This issue persists despite these regions reporting a remarkable 100 percent voter turnout. Sarma emphasized the need for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to address these discrepancies effectively.
During a press conference in Chirang, Sarma pointed out that the names of married daughters often remain on their parents’ voter rolls even after they have relocated, and many names of deceased individuals are not removed. He noted, “In ‘char’ (sandbar) areas and other places, the voter list is filled with names of deceased people. Yet, 100 percent polling happens in those places.”
Furthermore, the chief minister advocated for linking voters’ names with Aadhaar numbers during the SIR process, arguing that this would help eliminate duplication and produce cleaner electoral rolls.
Sarma criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for opposing the SIR in Bihar, where state assembly elections are approaching later this year. He remarked, “He is not clear about what he wants. The Congress leader should urge the Election Commission to revise the voter lists and link them with Aadhaar so that a person cannot vote in two places.”
Turning his critique toward Gandhi, Sarma questioned, “If the voter lists are so erroneous, how did you win in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana? Earlier, you blamed Electronic Voting Machines; now, the voter list is your new ammunition.”
