The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with the Forest and Environment Department of the Government of Gujarat, is set to celebrate World Lion Day 2025 today, August 10, at the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Devbhumi Dwarka district, Gujarat. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions globally, focusing particularly on the Asiatic Lion, a unique ecological and cultural treasure native to the Saurashtra region.
The celebrations will span across 11 districts of Saurashtra, emphasizing the importance of preserving the ‘King of the Jungle’—the Asiatic Lion. These majestic creatures inhabit approximately 35,000 square kilometers of land in the Saurashtra area, and the lion population in Gujarat has grown by 32% since 2020, increasing from 674 to 891 according to recent estimates.
The Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 192.31 square kilometers, is emerging as a vital habitat for the Asiatic Lions. Following a natural migration in 2023, the lion population in Barda has reached 17, comprising six adults and eleven cubs. This sanctuary is not only crucial for biodiversity but also plays a significant role in the conservation efforts for the Asiatic Lion.
Located near the popular tourist circuit of Dwarka, Porbandar, and Somnath, Barda offers considerable tourism potential. Plans for a safari park spanning 248 hectares have been approved, and approximately ₹180 crore will be invested in wildlife conservation initiatives unveiled at the event.
The celebrations will also connect with students from schools and colleges across the 11 districts through satellite communication, fostering a sense of community and awareness regarding lion conservation in the Greater Gir Lion Landscape.
