Residents and motorists at Edayarpalayam Junction on Thadagam Road in Coimbatore are calling for a crucial change to improve traffic flow: the replacement of the existing U-turn system with a roundabout. This request stems from ongoing traffic congestion and confusion, particularly during peak hours. Locals report that the current configuration is causing unnecessary delays and hazards, as many drivers struggle to navigate the junction effectively.
K. Maniraj, a local resident, expressed frustrations about the congestion, stating, “Vehicles heading towards the city are caught in traffic due to others waiting to make the U-turn. Some drivers even have to brake suddenly after missing their turn.” The lack of clear signage and traffic regulation at the junction has added to the daily challenges faced by commuters.
Fellow resident M. Adhitiyan highlighted that the junction previously operated with a traffic signal, which also fell short of expectations. “Even when the signal was functioning, it caused delays. There’s ample space for a roundabout, but the newly-installed high-mast light in the center may need to be moved for this to happen,” he noted. The sentiment among residents suggests that a roundabout could provide a more efficient solution to the persistent traffic issues.
Officials from the Highways Department’s road safety wing have acknowledged the residents’ concerns and confirmed that there is a proposal to construct a roundabout. “The current U-turn setup was introduced on a trial basis. If necessary, we can consider a trial for a roundabout as well,” an official stated, reinforcing the possibility of a significant change in the junction’s design.
S. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), also mentioned that the roundabout option is under consideration. “We will inspect the location and take the necessary steps based on our assessment,” he said, affirming that the authorities are taking the matter seriously.
