Tamulpur’s Urgent Response: Culling Pigs Amid African Swine Fever Threat
The Assam government has mandated the culling of all pigs within a one-kilometre radius of Khudra Jarkona and Gurmou villages in Tamulpur district after African swine fever cases were confirmed in the area. This directive was issued by Tamulpur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Pankaj Chakravarty on August 6, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following a request from the Sub-Divisional Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer. The outbreak was traced back to pig farms belonging to Bishnu Boro in Khudra Jarkona and Mridul Deka in Gurmou.
In an effort to contain the virus, the administration has implemented three significant restrictions. First, the transportation of pigs and pig-related products from the affected areas has been banned. Second, the sale of pork in public spaces and markets is prohibited. Lastly, it is forbidden to dispose of pig carcasses in open spaces, water bodies, or dustbins.
This order will remain in force until further notice. Residents are encouraged to report any suspected cases of African swine fever to the veterinary department or district administration. To ensure safety during the culling operations, security has been arranged for the veterinary officials and staff involved, as instructed by the Senior Superintendent of Police. Additionally, the Public Health Engineering Department has been assigned the task of providing lime and bleaching powder for sanitation in the impacted regions.
