A new film project titled “Malegaon Files” is currently in development, focusing on the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast that rocked Maharashtra. Directed by Rajiv S. Ruia, the film seeks to revisit the tragic events of September 29, when a bomb exploded near Bhikku Chowk, close to a mosque, resulting in six deaths and injuring 95 others.
The incident sparked a lengthy investigation and legal saga, initially managed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad before being handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2011. Although 11 individuals were initially accused, charges were eventually brought against seven, including former MP Sadhvi Pragya. Earlier this year, all were acquitted by a Mumbai NIA court, which determined there was insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Filmmaker Rajiv S. Ruia, renowned for his work on “My Friend Ganesha,” is set to bring this nuanced story to the screen. Currently in pre-production, the film is being produced by Sahil Seth under the banner of Cinedust 18 Films Pvt. Ltd.
Ruia emphasized that the film goes beyond just the blast. He stated, “This is about what followed-politically, emotionally, legally. It’s about the people caught in the middle, not just headlines.” The film aims to explore the emotional and legal ramifications, portraying the profound effects on both the victims’ families and the accused individuals.
The script is being developed with meticulous attention to detail, involving extensive research into court documents, investigative reports, and personal testimonies to create a narrative that is both accurate and respectful. Filming locations are being selected, and reconnaissance plans are already in place.
Production is anticipated to begin by late 2025, though details regarding the cast and shooting schedule have not yet been disclosed.
“Malegaon Files” aims to shed light on the complex legal aftermath of the 2008 blast and its impact on those involved, providing viewers with a deeper understanding of one of India’s most contentious and emotionally charged cases.
