Complete Your ITR Filing AY25-26: Verify in 30 Days to Ensure Validity!
In New Delhi, experts emphasize that income tax returns (ITRs) must be verified within 30 days after being uploaded online. Simply submitting a return on the official e-filing website (www.incometax.gov.in) does not complete the filing process. ITRs submitted without e-verification will be considered invalid. With less than two months remaining until the extended deadline of September 15 for filing income tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26, many taxpayers have already completed the required process.
For those who have not yet verified their ITRs, several options are available. Taxpayers can either verify their returns electronically or download the ITR-V acknowledgment form, sign it, and mail a physical copy to the Income Tax department’s Central Processing Centre in Bengaluru, ensuring it arrives within the 30-day window.
E-verification is notably quicker and easier than physical verification, allowing for real-time confirmation of your submission. This instant process can take just minutes, compared to physical verification, which may take days. A straightforward option for e-verification is to use an Aadhaar-linked mobile number to receive an OTP (One-Time Password).
To e-verify your returns, visit the e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) and log in. Navigate to the ‘e-File’ menu, select ‘Income Tax Returns’, and then choose ‘e-Verify Return’. From there, opt to generate an OTP for e-verification. By selecting ‘Aadhaar OTP’, you can enter the code sent to your mobile device. Alternatively, you may log in to your net banking account and find the e-verification option often located under the ‘Tax’ section.
Another method to generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) includes logging into a pre-validated bank account or demat account or using ATMs. If applicable, a digital signature certificate (DSC) can also facilitate the process.
Once the e-verification is complete, the portal will display a confirmation message along with a transaction ID. Furthermore, the Income Tax department will send a confirmation email to your registered address. If you cannot complete the e-verification within the allotted 30 days, you must submit a ‘condonation of delay’ request on the official portal. This should explain the reasons for the delay before processing your return. If the Income Tax department approves your request, your return will be considered verified.
