Bongaigaon, July 31: The president of the Congress party’s Bongaigaon district unit, Girish Barua, has voiced strong opposition to the inclusion of certain voters from the Bongaigaon Assembly segment in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). During a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan today, Barua revealed that 1,799 voters from Bongaigaon have been listed as voters in the Kajalgaon BTC constituency.
Barua highlighted that all three polling stations designated for these voters-specifically numbered 64, 65, and 66-are located at Rajendra School in New Bongaigaon, which falls under the Bongaigaon Assembly segment. He further noted that booth-level officers (BLOs) assigned to these stations, who operate under the Bongaigaon district administration, were given orders by the Chirang district administration to serve in the upcoming BTC polls. However, they requested a written directive from their superiors, which has yet to be provided, according to Barua.
He characterized this situation as ‘intentional,’ arguing that it infringes upon the rights of Bongaigaon voters. Barua stressed that the Election Commission of India included New Bongaigaon Railway Colony within the Bongaigaon Assembly seat during the recent delimitation exercise, making it inappropriate to count voters from this area as part of the BTC.
In response to these developments, Barua has called for immediate action from the Bongaigaon administration and criticized local legislator Diptimoyee Choudhury and Barpeta Lok Sabha MP Phani Bhusan Choudhury for their inaction on such a critical issue.
Furthermore, the Assam government’s recent decision to incorporate Assamese and indigenous-majority villages from Northern Sootea into the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) has stirred significant unrest among local residents. At a protest meeting held on July 29 in Sapekhati, villagers expressed strong opposition to this reorganization, arguing that it was enacted without proper consultation and could result in the erosion of their cultural identity and administrative connections.
