Massive tsunami waves struck the coastlines of Japan and Russia on Wednesday following a powerful earthquake registering 8.8 on the Richter scale off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The seismic activity, occurring about 250 km from Hokkaido, prompted evacuations and tsunami warnings across multiple regions, including French Polynesia and Chile. Reports indicate that the earthquake, which is noted as the sixth largest on record, caused damage to several structures and resulted in some injuries in the area.
In addition to the earthquake, the Klyuchevskoy volcano, Eurasia’s tallest active volcano located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, began ejecting lava into the Pacific Ocean. The Russian Academy of Sciences’ United Geophysical Service reported seeing streams of burning hot lava on the volcano’s western slope along with significant glow and explosions.
The Klyuchevskoy volcano is situated approximately 450 km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region’s capital, and has a history of eruptions, the latest occurring this year. Local observers have frequently noted significant volcanic activity, capturing and sharing videos of the eruptions widely on social media. Prior to the quake, Japan’s national broadcaster, NHK, had issued alerts warning of the potential for massive waves affecting both northern and eastern coastal regions.
According to the NASA Earth Observatory, Kamchatka is home to nearly 300 volcanoes, with 29 classified as active. This region, often referred to as the “land of fire and ice,” is recognized as one of the world’s most seismically active volcanic zones. The earthquake itself, striking the Kamchatka Peninsula at approximately 11:25 AM local time, marked one of the most significant seismic events in recent history.
In the aftermath, tsunami warnings were downgraded in Japan, Russia, and Hawaii, although close to two million residents in Japan were advised to evacuate as a precaution. The extensive seismic activity serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of this geologically active area.
