Veteran actor Prakash Raj appeared at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Hyderabad on Wednesday following summons related to a controversial online betting app promotion. According to ED sources, he was called in to assist with the investigation.
The central investigative agency has already interrogated several South Indian actors in connection to this case, where allegations have surfaced against numerous celebrities for collecting millions by promoting illegal betting applications. In addition to Prakash Raj, the ED has also summoned Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, and Lakshmi Manchu for questioning. Rana Daggubati was interrogated on July 23, while Prakash Raj was called in on July 30. Vijay Deverakonda is slated for questioning on August 6, followed by Lakshmi Manchu on August 13.
The list of summoned celebrities includes many other notable names from the South Indian film industry, such as Pranita Subhash, Nidhi Agarwal, Anuy Nagalla, Srimukhi, Sai Pallavi, Ritu Chowdhury, ‘Testy Teja’, Shyamala, Harsh Sai, Bhaiya Chani Yadav, Vishnu Priya, and Imran Khan, among others. The ED confirmed that cases have been registered against all these celebrities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The allegations suggest that these celebrities have lured ordinary people into betting by promoting these apps on social media. The First Information Report (FIR) indicates that these applications deal with significant sums of money, and many individuals have fallen into this trap due to celebrity endorsements. Sources from the ED noted that the investigation revealed these stars were substantially compensated to post promotional content for the apps on their social media channels.
