The Lunglei district administration in South Mizoram is ready to start biometric enrollment for Myanmar refugees residing in the area, beginning this week, according to a senior official. The official stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been approving test data entries in the Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) to facilitate the actual biometrics collection. However, the MHA has instructed that no data entries should be made and all activities need to be paused until further notice. Officials from the MHA will provide updates on when data collection can commence.
The Lunglei district administration is fully prepared to proceed before the end of July, contingent upon the MHA’s clearance of test entries in the FIP. Vanlalmawia, the Mizoram home secretary, informed the Times of India that the state government has allocated Rs 38 lakh for initial expenses related to biometric data collection, which is expected to start later this month. While the MHA will bear all costs associated with the overall exercise, the state will initially cover expenses to expedite the process, with further costs incurred as the initiative progresses.
Officials noted that computers, web cameras, and other electronic equipment are essential for this task, and procurement is already underway. The government is poised to implement the biometric enrollment of Myanmar nationals seeking refuge in the state, utilizing the Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrollment (FIP&BE) for this purpose.
As per the latest records, there are 32,504 displaced individuals from Myanmar in Mizoram, with the Champhai, Lawngtlai, and Siaha districts housing the highest concentrations. District police reported that as of early July, Lunglei district hosts 1,991 Myanmar refugees.
